Want bigger legs? Squat. Want a stronger back, a harder core and glutes that actually fill out your jeans? Squat some more. There’s a reason the barbell squat has survived every fitness trend of the last 50 years: few lifts put your quads, glutes, adductors, spinal erectors and core to work all at once.

Do you work out regularly, but see little or no improvements? Are you trying to build muscle and gain strength? Then you should reassess your diet and workout routine. Simple things, such as using bad form, missing out on the big lifts, and doing too much cardio, can ruin your gains and hold you back.

Contrary to popular belief, squats are not knee killers – though squats with bad form could certainly fit that description. If you’ve tried to add squats to your routine only to find that they hurt your knees (assuming you don’t have an existing knee injury), don’t give up just yet.
