Oscar-winning actor Oliand-pepper curls, which have been a key element of her glam for the Wicker movie press run. Given this major departure from the Colman we’ve come to know, we had to learn more about the magic behind her attention-grabbing ringlets
Hairstylist Clayton Hawkins has been working with Colman throughout said press tour, and tells Allure that styling the star is “a dream.” Since Wicker is a romance—it’s about a lonely woman (Colman) whose wicker husband (Alexander Skarsgård) comes to life—the pair landed on “big, sexy romantic curls” for Colman’s public appearances. “She has gorgeous natural curls that I played up this week,” Hawkins shares. After prepping the hair with Amika’s Frizz Me Not Hydrating Anti-Frizz Treatment, he diffused the star’s hair with a L’Oréal Airlight Pro hair dryer, then created “wild and sexy” curls with a 0.5″ curling iron, wrapping the hair in random sections throughout. A pouf of Sexy Hair’s Powder Play Lite Soft Volumizing & Texturizing Powder at the roots added volume, as did some teasing and raking with a wide-tooth comb.
Hawkins, who also has silver hair, has a few smart tips for anyone experimenting with the “quiet silver” trend. “If you take care of gray hair and keep it silvery, there’s nothing better, in my opinion,” he says. Purple shampoo is a go-to for gray, white, and blonde hair, but Hawkins also recommends an SPF to keep the brassiness at bay. He recommends Dove’s UV Repair & Glow UV Defense Serum—Hawkins often works with the brand—but you could also try Coola’s Scalp & Hair Mist Sunscreen to protect your scalp and your color.
To say people are excited to see how the Wicker romance comes to life is an understatement; the movie hits theaters on October 23. (The star has curls in the movie too, albeit a much shorter length, and her wicker husband has romance novel-cover blonde hair and facial hair!) “[Colman] is hilarious and beautiful and a joy to be around and I can’t WAIT to see this sexy, bonkers movie,” Hawkins says.
