Fresno, California, is the heart of the San Joaquin Valley and the largest city in the greater Central Valley region. As Central California’s most populous city, it boasts a diverse community and rich culture.

Fresno is known for its deep agricultural roots, sunny skies most days of the year, great eats, an underrated arts scene, and outdoor adventures galore. Not to mention, three national parks (Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon) are located less than a two-hour drive away.

Visiting the city, relocating to Fresno, planning a date night, or looking for family-friendly attractions? Keep reading for a list of things to do in Fresno. Chuze Fitness just opened itsnewest gym in Fresnoon West Shaw Avenue, so we rounded up our favorite local spots, plus a few easy ways to keep moving while you explore.

Outdoor Things to Do in Fresno

Fresno is home to a lovely medley of urban parks, subterranean architecture, and easy access to nature trails and California’s major wilderness areas.

    1. Explore Woodward Park

At roughly 300 acres, Woodward Park is the city’s largest park. It sits along the San Joaquin River and has about five miles of trails for walking, biking, or jogging. Perfect for a relaxing afternoon outdoors orstaying active, this park has multiple playgrounds, a BMX bike course, a Japanese garden, picnic areas, fishing ponds, a wooded 18-hole golf course, and a disc golf area.

    2. Visit the Shinzen Japanese Friendship Garden

The Shinzen Friendship Garden is part of Woodward Park. It’s a destination of its own, but the quiet, low-cost stop also pairs naturally with a park visit.

This five-acre oasis features more than 100 bonsai, koi ponds, and a teahouse. There are also seasonal cultural events, including Shinzen’s annual autumn color-viewing event, a spring-blossom Festival, and the Toro Nagashi floating lantern ceremony.

    3. Bike or Walk the San Joaquin River Parkway Trails

These multi-use trails, including the sprawling Lewis S. Eaton Trail, wind along the San Joaquin River connecting to Woodward Park and beyond. If you want to stay active without a formal workout while visiting Fresno, they’re just the thing for a longer run, bike ride, or walk.

    4. Drive the Fresno County Blossom Trail (Seasonal)

If you’re in the area between late February and early March, don’t miss Fresno County’s famous Blossom Trail. The 62-mile self-guided drive or cycling route through blooming orchards in Central California’s agricultural heartland is truly a sight to see.

Arts, Culture, and History in Fresno

Fresno flaunts a rich, lively cultural landscape shaped by highly rated museums, historic architecture, and a vibrant local arts community.

    5. Tour the Forestiere Underground Gardens

Built over the course of 40 years by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere (using just hand tools and two mules), the Forestiere Underground Gardens are a California Registered Historical Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, and genuinely one of the city’s most distinctive attractions.

The subterranean complex of tunnels, structures, courtyards, and living fruit trees is drenched in natural light from skylights. This incredibly unique and inspiring tourist destination is absolutely worth checking out.

    6. Step Back in Time at the Meux Home Museum

Downtown Fresno’s Meux Home Museum is also on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built by Civil War surgeon Dr. Thomas Richard Meux, the 1888 gothic Victorian mansion has been restored and beautifully preserved.

Inside the 16-room house, you’ll see original furnishings, woodwork, Victorian-era art, and gaslight fixtures. Guided tours are fairly quick (usually under an hour) and available midday Friday through Sunday. Admission is affordable, too.

    7. Browse the Fresno Art Museum

The Fresno Art Museum is one of the city’s staples. It focuses on modern and contemporary work, alongside a notable pre-Columbian collection. Exhibits rotate regularly, so it’s worth checking the current schedule before visiting.

    8. Explore the Tower District

Developed in the early 20th century as one of the city’s first “streetcar suburbs,” the Tower District is among Fresno’s oldest neighborhoods. It still features much of its historic architecture, including the Art Deco Tower Theatre (built in 1939), classic storefronts, and 1920s bungalows.

Today, the Tower District is a main hub for arts and nightlife. It’s highly walkable, with delicious eats, local bars, concert venues, theaters, galleries, small boutiques, and lots of culture to take in. The neighborhood is a go-to for an evening out in Fresno.

Where to Eat, Drink, and Explore Downtown

The downtown district has no shortage of excellent restaurants, bars, food carts, shops, galleries, and landmarks.

    9. Wander Downtown Fresno’s Mural District and Gallery Row

Downtown Fresno has a growing collection of murals and gallery spaces. The hub is extra-bustling during the twice-monthly ArtHop event (every first and third Thursday). This is a good option for a self-guided walk between meals.

    10. Visit the Kearney Mansion Museum

Built in 1903, the Kearney Mansion is a turn-of-the-century landmark inside downtown Fresno’s Kearney Park. It was originally the Fruit Vale Estate headquarters and home of agricultural pioneer M. Theo Kearney (aka the “Raisin King of California”).

Guided tours cover the ranch’s history, as well as the region’s prominent agricultural roots. This is a quieter, less-crowded alternative to Fresno’s more central museums.

Things to Do for Active and Family-Focused Visitors

Families, groups, and anyone traveling with children can find plenty to do in Fresno.

    11. Get Hands-On at the Discovery Center

This science-focused museum and outdoor park (sitting on over 5 acres of land) includes hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) exhibits, educational activities, a stunning cactus garden, and a turtle pond. The Discovery Center is a strong option for families with younger kids.

    12. Cool Off at Island Waterpark

This tropical-themed waterpark offers a super-fun solution for escaping the heat during Central Valley’s hot season. The 42-acre, family-friendly attraction has tons of rides, 16 water slides, a lazy river, a wading pool, a sand beach, and a rainforest-themed water playground. Set aside at least a half-day to get the most out of this experience.

    13. See the Animals at Fresno Chaffee Zoo

The Chaffee Zoo is AZA-accredited, meaning the nonprofit Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has certified it for meeting the “gold standard” in animal care and wildlife conservation.

This must-see destination is located in Fresno’s Roeding Park. Covering 39 acres, with eight major exhibits, the zoo houses over 190 animal species, including elephants, big cats, giraffes, and stingrays. It’s a strong anchor activity for a half or full day, especially for families and group outings.

    14. Train and Recover at the New Chuze Fitness Fresno

After a day of trails, museums, and Tower District eats, the new Chuze Fitness Fresno on West Shaw Avenue is a place to keep that momentum going. The club has aLift Labwith specialty equipment for strength building and glute training, group fitnessclasses (including heated classes in Studio IR), and Chuze Cinema, where you can log cardio while a movie plays on the big screen.

When it’s time to unwind, therecovery amenitiesinclude red light therapy, compression boots, an infrared sauna, and massage chairs. Visiting or new to town? Stop by with afree 7-day pass.

    Quick Tips for Visiting Fresno

Here’s what we recommend when planning your upcoming Fresno visit.

    15. Plan Around the Season and the Day Trips

Fresno summers run hot: daytime highs often reach the mid-90s. Mornings tend to be the best window for outdoor activities between May and September. On the hottest afternoons, take your workout indoors, whether that’s abeginner workouton the gym floor or a cardio session in front of a movie.

Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks are all within roughly 90 minutes of Fresno, making the city a practical home base for a multi-day trip. Most central attractions (including the Tower District, downtown, and Woodward Park) are a short drive apart, so having a car makes the day easier. If you’re planning back-to-back hiking days, give your legs some attention in between. Ourrecovery articlescover simple ways to bounce back.
