Testosterone is what separates the men from the boys. This hormone is not only crucial in shaping male characteristics – it also plays a significant role in shaping your body, providing the stamina to handle long lifting sessions, especially when you’re training several days a week.

While excessive levels of testosterone can result in uncalled for aggression, low levels make you lame, and you lack the energy. Testosterone is even more important if you’re a bodybuilder. Maintaining strength, recovery and training consistency requires you to keep your hormonal environment in order. It’d be a shame if you let all those hours, days and months of sweating go down the drain because your diet was working against you.

Fast food, soda drinks, refined sugars and soy are the obvious culprits. These are the first things you scratch off the list if you want to be serious about your progress. But there are others – less obvious foods that can quietly undermine your testosterone production. Some have strong evidence behind them. Others are more nuanced. Here’s what the research actually says.

    1. Refined Carbohydrates

Graham crackers are an interesting starting point for this topic. They were conceived by the Presbyterian minister Sylvester Graham in 1829 as part of his Graham Diet, originally made of graham flour. Their stated purpose was to suppress carnal urges – Graham believed bland food could curb s*xual appetite. His theory about the crackers is obviously nonsense. But modern versions of his crackers, made largely from refined wheat flour rather than the whole grain he originally used, do illustrate a real problem.

There’s no good reason to think graham crackers have some unique effect on testosterone. The issue is what they’re made of. A diet heavily dependent on refined carbohydrates creates repeated insulin spikes throughout the day. High insulin promotes fat gain, and excess body fat converts testosterone to estrogen through a process called aromatization. The more refined carbs you eat, the more this cycle compounds over time.

It’s not just graham crackers. White bread, pastries, breakfast cereals – anything made primarily with refined flour lands in the same category. If refined carbs are a major part of your diet, that’s the first thing worth addressing.

    2. Flaxseed

Flaxseed is more complicated than it first appears. It’s often presented as the mother of all omega-3 that it also contains very high levels of lignans, which are compounds with estrogen-like activity in the body

Flaxseeds contain roughly 3 times more phytoestrogens than soy. A 2001 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that lignan supplementation reduced testosterone and androgen activity in men. But that was a supplementation study using concentrated lignans – not a study of people eating flaxseed in normal dietary amounts. The evidence is real but it doesn’t mean one tablespoon in your morning shake will tank your testosterone.

If you’re eating large amounts of ground flaxseed daily because you think it’s good for you, it’s worth reconsidering whether fish or krill oil would be a cleaneroad

    3. Spearmint

Mint tea is one of the most commonly consumed teas, known for its ability to soothe digestive upset. What most people don’t know is that spearmint in particular has measurable anti-androgenic properties – enough that it’s clinically used to treat hirsutism, which is excess hair growth in women, specifically because it reduces testosterone.

A 2007 study in Phytotherapy Research found that spearmint tea significantly reduced free testosterone in women after 30 days. Studies in men are limited, and the effect may be smaller or different. But if you’re drinking spearmint tea twice a day because it’s “healthy”, and you’re actively trying to optimize testosterone, that’s a habit worth reconsidering. Peppermint shows similar properties in animal studies, though human data is thinner.

    4. Beans

Beans are packed with protein and provide good carbohydrates. They’re also a reasonable budget food for anyone trying to hit a daily protein target. The phytoestrogenic issue with beans is real – they contain lignans and some varieties contain inositol, both of which have estrogen-like activity – but the evidence that normal bean consumption meaningfully suppresses testosterone in men is not as strong as it is for alcohol or flaxseed.

If you’re eating beans as an occasional proteiny about. If you’re using beans as your primary proteinoring in

    5. Alcohol

This is where the evidence is considerably stronger than for anything else on this list. Alcohol is processed by the body as a toxin. While it’s being metabolized, testosterone production slows and the body’s ability to clear excess estrogen from the bloodstream is impaired. You get a double hit – less testosterone being made, and more estrogen accumulating.

If you’re having several drinks every weekend, that’s worth looking at before you start worrying about flaxseed or spearmint tea. Regular heavy drinking produces sustained, measurable reductions in baseline testosterone. Even periodic binge drinking creates a temporary suppression that takes several days to reverse. If you’re training hard during the week and undoing it on Friday and Saturday nights, the math isn’t working in your favor.

    6. Coffee – With a Caveat

Coffee gets a mixed verdict. Most studies show that caffeine before training actually boosts testosterone slightly in healthy individuals without caffeine sensitivity. For the majority of lifters, pre-workout coffee is a net positive.

The issue is with caffeine-sensitive people who experience jitteriness, elevated anxiety and disrupted sleep from normal caffeine doses. Chronic anxiety raises cortisol, and cortisol and testosterone are directly antagonistic – when one goes up, the other tends to come down. For those people, the hormonal cost of daily coffee is real, even if the mechanism isn’t the caffeine itself but the stress response it triggers.

If coffee makes you feel wired and anxious rather than alert and focused, that’s information worth acting on. For everyone else, there’s no good reason to give up your morning cup.
