The Way You Eat on Weekends May Matter More Than You Think

Weekends are supposed to be the good life: extra sleep, longer training sessions, and maybe a little dietary chaos. Brunch instead of breakfast. A massive late‑night cheat meal. A family‑sized bag of chips that mysteriously disappears during the game. Most guys shift their eating schedule once Friday night hits—and assume it’s no big deal.

But a large new study in Communications Medicine suggests that this “eating jetlag”—the difference between when you eat on weekdays versus weekends—may come with a real cost for men’s heart health.

What Is ‘Eating Jetlag’ and Why Is It Dangerous for Men?

Researchers in France analyzed data from 104,806 adults (average age: 43) enrolled in the long‑running NutriNet‑Santé cohort. Participants logged the timing of their first and last meals every day, allowing scientists to calculate each person’s “eating jetlag”—how much their weekend eating window shifted compared to their weekday routine.

    Participants fell into three groups:

    • Advance: Weekend meals happened earlier than weekday meals (about 2 hours).
    • Maintenance: Eating schedule stayed consistent all week.
    • Delay: Weekend meals happened later than weekday meals (about 1 hour 40 minutes).

Researchers then analyzed how these patterns related to cardiovascular disease risk, adjusting for age, lifestyle, diet quality, sleep, and more.

The Impact of Weekend Meal Timing Shifts on Men’s Heart Health

If you’re loose with your weekend eating schedule, the news isn’t great.

Men in both the Advance and Delay groups had a higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared to men who kept their eating times steady. The more people’s eating schedule drifted, the worse the risk climbed.

Key findings for men:Every additional hour of eating jetlag equals 14% higher cardiovascular disease risk and 21% higher risk of coronary heart disease

    • 44% higher cardiovascular disease risk
    • 68% higher coronary heart disease risk

Delay group:36% higher coronary heart disease risk

Over roughly eight years of follow‑up, researchers recorded 2,368 new cardiovascular disease cases, including strokes.

And here’s the curveball: Women didn’t show the same risk pattern. The researchers suspect differences in circadian biology, hormones, lifestyle patterns, and men’s higher baseline heart‑disease risk may explain the gap. But it’s all speculation at this point.

Why Meal Timing Matters for Your Heart

Your body runs on a circadian clock that regulates sleep, digestion, metabolism, and cardiovascular function. When your meal timing swings wildly between weekdays and weekends, you disrupt those internal rhythms—similar to how jetlag throws off your sleep.

For men, that disruption appears to translate into higher heart‑disease risk over time.

This study can’t prove causation, and the participants were French adults who may be more health‑conscious than the average American guy. Meal timing was also self‑reported. Still, the association was strong enough to raise eyebrows in the nutrition and cardiology world.

The Bottom Line for Fitness Men

What you eat matters. But when you eat may matter almost as much—especially for long‑term heart health.

You don’t need to be a monk about meal timing. A late brunch or a late dinner won’t wreck your heart. But consistently swinging your eating schedule by hours every weekend might not be doing your cardiovascular system any favors.

A steadier eating window across all seven days is a simple, zero‑cost habit that could support better heart health—and better training recovery. So be consistent when you slam that protein drink.

3 Simple Ways Men Can Fix “Eating Jetlag” and Protect Their Heart

    Watch the Clock

Take note of your weekday meal times and aim to stay close to them on weekends.

    Anchor at Least One Meal

Keep breakfast or lunch at your usual time. Even one consistent meal helps stabilize your overall eating window.

Don’t Skip Breakfast Just Because You Slept In

Skipping your first meal pushes your entire eating window later, amplifying circadian disruption.
